Selling on TikTok in Kenya: What Actually Works

TikTok has become a real place for Kenyan sellers to find customers, particularly for secondhand and thrift fashion sold through live videos. Before setting up around it, it helps to be clear about what TikTok actually does for a seller in Kenya today, since some advice floating around overstates it.
What TikTok Shop does not do in Kenya yet
TikTok's own in-app Shop checkout, the feature that lets a buyer pay inside the app without leaving TikTok, is only available in a limited set of countries, and Kenya is not currently one of them. If you have seen advice suggesting you can set up TikTok's native seller checkout in Kenya the same way a seller in the United States or United Kingdom can, that advice is describing a feature you cannot actually access here. This is worth stating plainly, since a seller who spends time trying to activate something unavailable in their country is wasting effort on the wrong step.
What TikTok is genuinely good for in Kenya
TikTok works well as a discovery and content channel: short videos showing a product, a live session going through new arrivals, or a styling clip that gets shared around. What it is not, at least not yet in Kenya, is a place where the sale itself happens end to end inside the app. The actual order and payment need to happen somewhere else.
The path that actually works
- TikTok for discovery. Videos and live sessions bring people to your profile and build the audience that trusts you enough to buy.
- Link in bio to a real catalog. The same shop link approach that works for Instagram works here: one link, your full product range, organized and priced.
- Order by WhatsApp or automated checkout. Once a customer has decided what they want, the order and payment happen the same way they would for any other channel, either confirmed over WhatsApp or through automated checkout at your shop link.
- Payment to your own number. A Till Number, PayBill, or Pochi la Biashara account, paid directly by the customer, not through FlexiDuka.
A note on TikTok Live selling
Live-selling, where a seller goes live and takes orders in real time as items are shown, is a common pattern among Kenyan secondhand and mtumba clothing sellers on TikTok. It works well for the discovery and excitement part of a sale, but the actual order still needs to be confirmed and paid for outside the live session itself, usually by having interested buyers message the seller directly afterward. A shop link gives that follow-up conversation something concrete to point to, rather than relying on a buyer remembering which item they wanted after the live session ends.
What to film
Content that tends to work for sellers is simple: a short clip unboxing new stock as it arrives, a quick styling or usage demonstration, or a behind-the-scenes look at preparing an order for delivery. None of this needs production value beyond a steady phone camera and reasonable lighting. The goal of the video is to earn a profile visit, not to close the sale on its own, so it does not need to include prices or ordering instructions itself as long as the bio link is easy to find.
Setting up your catalog
The same principles that apply to any shop link apply here: clear photos, honest pricing, and a catalog kept up to date with what is actually still available. If you are already running an Instagram page alongside TikTok, the same shop link works for both, so there is no need to build two separate catalogs. Our guide to adding a shop link to Instagram covers the setup in more detail, and applies just as well here.
Getting started
A Starter plan at KES 1,200 a year covers up to 10 products, a reasonable starting size for testing how a shop link fits alongside your TikTok content. If you are still deciding whether you need this at all, our post on whether social media alone is enough covers that question directly. When you are ready, send your business details and choose a plan on our pricing page.
