How to Sell on WhatsApp in Kenya

A lot of small businesses in Kenya already sell through WhatsApp, often without thinking of it as a formal sales channel. A customer messages, asks about a product, sends a photo request, and pays once they agree on a price. It works, but it has limits that show up as soon as the number of customers grows. If you are weighing whether a shop link is worth adding at all, our post on whether you need a website if you already sell on Instagram or WhatsApp answers that question directly.

What selling on WhatsApp actually involves

At its simplest, selling on WhatsApp means using WhatsApp Business to set up a profile, list your products through the catalog feature, and respond to customer messages one at a time. This works well for a business handling a manageable number of orders a day, where personal replies are part of the appeal. It becomes harder to manage once you are fielding the same product questions repeatedly, searching old chats for a price you quoted last week, or losing track of who has actually paid.

Two ways FlexiDuka merchants take orders

Not every shop needs the same setup, and being upfront about that matters more than making WhatsApp sound like it is either everything or nothing.

  • WhatsApp ordering. Your shop link lets a customer browse your full catalog, then message you on WhatsApp to place the order. You confirm details and share your Till, PayBill, or Pochi la Biashara number directly. This suits shops that want to keep a personal touch on every order.
  • Automated checkout. The customer pays through an M-Pesa prompt at checkout without a WhatsApp message needed. This suits shops with steadier order volume where confirming every order by hand becomes the bottleneck.

Neither is more correct than the other. A shop selling made-to-order cakes may prefer WhatsApp ordering because every order needs a conversation about flavor and date anyway. A shop selling ready-made phone accessories may prefer automated checkout because there is nothing to discuss before payment.

When WhatsApp alone stops being enough

The clearest sign is repetition: if you are typing out the same product details and prices to different customers every day, a catalog does that work once instead of every time. A shop link also gives customers something to share with friends directly, rather than forwarding a screenshot of a chat.

A note on WhatsApp groups

Selling directly into WhatsApp groups is common in Kenya, and it works well for reaching an existing audience quickly. Its main limitation is that a product posted into a group is only visible to whoever happens to be online when you post it, and it quickly gets buried under other messages. A shop link solves this by giving group members somewhere permanent to check back, rather than relying on catching your post at the right moment.

Making WhatsApp Business work harder

If you are selling on WhatsApp, a few features of WhatsApp Business itself are worth setting up properly rather than skipping. A business profile with your hours, address, and a short description saves you repeating the same information. Quick replies let you save answers to common questions, like delivery areas or payment details, so you are not retyping them for every new customer. Labels help you track which chats are new inquiries, confirmed orders, or completed sales, which matters once you are juggling more than a handful of conversations at once.

Getting paid, whichever way you sell

Whether an order comes through WhatsApp or automated checkout, the payment itself still goes straight to your own Till Number, PayBill, or Pochi la Biashara account. FlexiDuka does not hold or move your money at any point.

If you are setting up a shop for the first time, our step-by-step launch guide covers the full process, including how to decide between WhatsApp ordering and automated checkout for your own shop. When you are ready, you can start your shop and keep selling on WhatsApp alongside it.
